Indicast # 138: Wiki Leaks aims at India

Thursday, 17 March 2011 05:30

Wiki Leaks has found a new market. It's India. After tying up with The Hindu, it has released a few cables which accuse some of our politicians of selling votes for cash. Japan is still recovering from one of its worst nightmares after suffering from one of the biggest earthquakes of the century. Back home in India, Jairam Ramesh, our Environment Minister is gearing up to carry out a security check across all of India's 20 nuclear plants. In other news, Vidharbha is the new Tiger capital of India and right at the end of this episode, Aditya is genuinely fascinated by a pair of silicon implants killing a snake!

Andrew Palmer, the Finance Editor of The Economist joins us to talk about his recently published Special Report on Property. His article starts with a strong statement: Property is widely seen as a safe asset. It is arguably the most dangerous of all. In this podcast, he talks about the importance accorded to property as an asset class and the reasons for its mercurial valuation especially in countries like USA, Spain, Ireland, etc which are currently in a housing soup.

In this chat, he refrains from using complex terms; that's not surprising considering his role as a jargon fighter at The Economist.

Did you know that there were 18,000 Indians holed up in Libya about a week back? The Indian government is going all out to evacuate all Indians in the region as Col Gaddafi refuses to let go of his assumed control over Libya. Back home, Aruna Shanbaug lies in a vegetative state for 37 years running but sees a glimmer of hope as the court allows passive euthanasia in her case. We'd love to know your views on euthanasia. Have you heard of a state stocking up on blood in anticipation of state elections? We just did: It's West Bengal. In other news, our beloved Uncle Pai, the creator of Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle series passed away. RIP.

The Indian IT industry has a new concept to deal with and TCS has pounced onto it. It's called Cloud Computing. With a revenue projection of 1 billion USD, TCS will focus on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) which total to a whopping 38 million. Many are calling this move as the Nano of the IT world where TATA hopes to replicate its success by tapping not the Fortune 500 companies but the smaller ones who can avail of this interesting concept. Rolls Royce, the British car maker announced record sales in India. We briefly cover the Union Budget highlights in this episode.

Yeh Faasley

Wednesday, 02 March 2011 00:00

Yeh Faasley is a perfect thriller. It’s a shame that the first hour and the court room scenes are very mediocre. Which is why the twists and turns post-interval come both as a pleasant surprise and make for one of the best climaxes meeta has seen in a long, long time.

Prof. Kanu Doshi on the Union Budget 2011

Saturday, 05 March 2011 14:54

Prof Kanu Doshi and his quintessential humour join us by branding this year's Union budget as an 'Accountant's budget' which is neither beneficial for the khaas aadmi nor the aam aadmi. Kanu bhai takes us through the different benefits (if any) that the common man can enjoy until the Direct Tax Code (DTC) is introduced in the coming year.

This podcast decodes jargons like AMT, LLP, DDT and many more. The Finance Minister lay special thrust on infrastructure by alloting more than Rs. 2000 crore for development of roadways, etc. Inviting foreign companies to invest in the infrastructure bonds by increasing the ceiling limit from 5 billion USD to 25 billion USD is one of the highlights of this year's budget and Kanu bhai tells us why. And of course, what about inflation? Check out the podcast and comment!
